Ninja 250…the answer to half the motorcycle questions on this forum.

You must be small to want a road bike that small, insurance is dirt cheap for a motor bike, unless you are looking to impress people make and model are irrelevant, one is as excellent as another. Do you know how to ride a bike? If it’s not a Harley Davidson, a BMW or an Indian, it ain’t a motorcycle anyway. A 250cc will get remarkable gas milage even if. Well that’s my opine on the theme anyway.

If you can find one: a 1991 Suzuki RGV250SP
They were banned from import and were strictly for Formula 2 and 250CC racing until the advent of the Aprilia RS250 Replica series; but they were four-stroke 750 killers even as late as 2000! They are tight-turning, quick as hell and simple to rebuild…and have all the bells and whistles for about $2000. You’ll make about 75bhp with a small work and they weigh about 350lbs…so 135-140mph isn’t out of the ballpark!

Look into the Honda Skyhawk CB250 or similar bike. I’ve driven this bike. Even if I wouldn’t urge pushing a road bike this size over 60mph. Doesn’t take to windy days very well. It’s too light to do serious highway riding. These are excellent starter bikes for mainly secondary roads in my opinion.

Boy, you are a dreamer. and you must weigh about 50 pounds. Otherwise, you’ll never get a 250cc anything to take you 70-80 mph, unless you are calculating your speed as you are going off a cliff. I’d say that for the average person, 60 mph would be the top speed. I don’t reckon that the speedometers even show 80 mph on the dial.
Insurance is relatively dirt cheap. I have a Harley Road Glide, 2007 model, with a 96 ci, or around 1585cc and insurance with full coverage for me is around $325 a year. And, since all US insurance companies base the rate of insurance on the digit of cc’s, a 250 will be a minimum amount.

Here in PA they offer free motorcycle safety way and provide motorcycles for the way, They are 250’s and most of them are Honda Shadows. These are excellent training cycles and are not very expensive. They start out teaching you the trip precheck through to avoiding hazzards on the road. We had 5 people in our class who have never driven a motorcycle, one of which never even been on a motorcycle before. Every person voted for the four day class and received their license. Try a smaller bike and work your way up until you be converted into more experienced. But, if this will be your first bike buy used and pay cash, get the experience of riding before moving up to larger and more expensive bikes. I have had friends who bought huge bikes like Goldwings and rode only a few times then promotion them at a loss because they weren’t ready for a huge bike. Not anything incorrect with starting small and effective up to larger later on. In fact the smaller bike will normally sell quicker when you are ready to go up, then use the money for your next bike. Which ever bike you choose, stay away from sportbikes unless you don’t mind paying 10-20 times more for insurance. Insurance companies consider these high risk and will charge you alot for coverage. Call your insurance company first and get a quote before you buy.
